Ruth Smeeth, Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent North, proposed obligatory country of foundation stamps to offer protection to merchandise made in Stoke-on-Trent.

Ms Smeeth instructed MPs that stamping may assist “create a degree taking part in box” for locally produced ceramics that face competition from inexpensive mass produced wares from out of the country.

“The success of our ceramic business is built on our recognition,” Ms Smeeth stated, “a reputation for high quality that has been cultivated now not over many years but over centuries.”
“Consumers will need to have religion that the products on our cabinets and people we export are in point of fact what their labels claim they’re,” she stated, calling on ministers to “make buy British more than just a slogan”.
Her Ceramic (United States of Origin) Bill is listed for a second studying in Parliament on 26 October.
