Mexico launches $7.4bn Tren Maya railway venture

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has introduced the Maya Educate – an formidable project to build a railway thru 5 south-jap states.

At an indigenous ceremony near the traditional Mayan ruins of Palenque, he stated this may help create loads of thousands of jobs.

The 1,525km (950-mile) railway will link Palenque and the tourist hotel of Cancún on the Caribbean coast.

But fighters warn it might damage the region’s necessary biosphere.

A third of the deliberate direction passes via pristine jungle, and the owners of the land, the Maya other people, say they have got now not been consulted.
