A 45-year-vintage woman has been killed in an alligator assault on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

Police answered to reviews of a girl being attacked in a lodge lagoon on Monday morning.

The sufferer, named as native resident Cassandra Cline, died at the scene after being pulled from the water.

Witnesses said she used to be attacked after seeking to offer protection to her puppy dog from the 8ft (2.4m) alligator. The dog was reportedly uninjured within the incident.
