Austrian ambassador downplays fears of kosher-halal meat register

The Austrian ambassador to Israel has downplayed studies of a plan by an Austrian state to require Jews and Muslims to sign in before they can purchase kosher and halal meat.

Martin Weiss said politicians in Lower Austria would work with spiritual groups to allay their fears.

The state’s right-wing surroundings minister stated he wanted to cut back animal slaughter without the use of surprising.

Gottfried Waldhäusl said it used to be wanted “from an animal welfare point of view”.

However, officers have ruled out requiring Jews to sign in to shop for kosher meat.

The concept led to a backlash amongst Jewish groups. Oskar Deutsch, president of the Jewish Community in Vienna, stated the plan might have intended compiling lists of Jews, reminiscent of racist Nazi regulations that have been introduced in Austria after it merged with Germany in 1938.
