Australia has formally agreed to a deal to help construct a 4,000km (2,500 mile) internet cable to the Solomon Islands.

The Solomon Islands, a small Pacific nation, had initially given the agreement to Chinese company Huawei.

High Minister Rick Houenipwela has mentioned the verdict adopted “considerations raised through Australia”, which neither nation has elaborated upon.

Analysts say Canberra is concerned approximately China’s influence within the area, a subject of recent Australian debate.
