Australian town pulls tourism advert over ‘whitewash’ controversy

An Australian town has got rid of a tourism ad from the internet after it was once accused of a “whitewash” of indigenous other people and ethnic minorities.

The advert for Rockhampton, Queensland, was once printed on Monday and confirmed scenes of individuals and native attractions.

But indigenous Australians criticised it for depicting best white other people, with one calling it “paternalistic”.

The town council removed the video and apologised following a backlash on-line.

Responding to a couple tweets, Rockhampton Nearby Council said: “We Should no longer be promoting the Rockhampton Area without celebrating the local indigenous Darumbal people, the area’s long history, and our diverse neighborhood.

“We apologise and we can do better.”

Rockhampton, about 600km (370 miles) north of Brisbane, is a town of about 80,000 people who promotes itself as Australia’s beef capital.

More than 7% of its population is indigenous, and the town has massive Vietnamese, Indian and Filipino communities.

The advert have been a part of efforts to convey “Rockhampton to the remainder of the country and certainly the arena”, the town’s mayor said on Monday, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

A Number Of folks talked about its lack of diversity, including the absence of representations of indigenous culture.

One city councillor, Tony Williams, mentioned it had been an oversight.

“As some distance as tourism is going, our indigenous tradition is really outstanding and we’d like to focus on that and include that as a priority,” he informed local newspaper The Morning Bulletin.

Critics welcomed the decision to remove the video.
